Gmail Bug Deletes E-Mails for 150,000 Users

The cloud has failed roughly 150,000 Gmail users, whose e-mails have been deleted and accounts disabled by a mysterious glitch.
Users on Google's help forum report that the Gmail bug responsible deletes everything, including e-mails, labels, folders, and settings. When affected users log on, they see a welcome message as if they've never used Gmail before. Other users simply found their accounts disabled while repairs are being done. According to Mashable, the bug affects less than 0.08 percent of users.

It's not yet clear whether Google will be able to restore the deleted e-mails. Google hasn't addressed the issue on the official Gmail blog, and the Google Apps Status Dashboard only acknowledges an ongoing "service disruption." Eventually, Google will have to explain how this happened and what will become of affected users' accounts.
For everyone else, the lost e-mails are a reminder of how Web storage isn't completely immune to failure. If you rely on Gmail to safeguard e-mailed documents and important correspondences, consider backing up your account.
Backup Advice
Ian Harac reviewed Gmail Backup in December and found it to be a functional, but feature-barren option. The software is free, but right now I can't access Gmail Backup's Website. (Perhaps it's overwhelmed by demand.) Ian also recommended Gmail Keeper, which offers multiple profiles, scheduled backups, and account migration for a one-time price of $30.
If you're comfortable backing up Web-based e-mail to another Web-based service, Backupify routinely saves Gmail accounts and other services such as Facebook and Picasa to its own servers. The first 2 GB are free, and premium plans costs $5 per month for 20 GB and $20 per month for unlimited storage.
The lost e-mails are reminiscent of a Hotmail server problem that temporarily deleted the e-mails of more than 17,000 users in December. Microsoft was able to restore access a few days later, so maybe there's hope for those unlucky Gmail users.
Updated With Google Response:The Next Web reported: "A very small number users are having difficulty accessing their Gmail accounts, and in some cases once they're in, trouble viewing e-mails. This is affecting less than .08% of our Gmail user base, and we've already fixed the problem for some users. Our engineers are working as quickly as possible and we hope to have everything back to normal as soon as possible. We're very sorry for the inconvenience."
11:45 a.m. PDT Update:Google now believes the problem affected 0.02 percent of Gmail users, not 0.08 percent as originally estimated. The problems have been fixed for roughly a third of those users, and the remaining two thirds should have their accounts restored within 12 hours. Google expects all disappearing e-mails, labels, and settings to be restored.
As for the cause of the problem, Kovacs said it's too early to get into details, but did say it was a bug on Google's end. The company plans to release a full incident report.

What would YOU like to see in Windows 8?

There’s an increasing amount of Windows 8 related chatter out there, and it seems likely that we’ll see the first beta during the second half of this year. So, with that in mind, we’ve probably still got some time to get a wishlist of what we’d like to see in this new version of Windows into Microsoft.
There’s an increasing amount of Windows 8 related chatter out there, and it seems likely that we’ll see the first beta during the second half of this year. So, with that in mind, we’ve probably still got some time to get a wishlist of what we’d like to see in this new version of Windows into Microsoft.
So, what would YOU like to see?
Let me kick off that list …
• Custom installer that has the ability to set up the OS on one drive and store data and settings on another.
• An end to 16/32-bit support (or at least a version that is pure 64-bit only).
• Proper touch/tablet support. Not just a theme but a new API that developers can tap into to make applications compatible for both desktop/notebook and tablet usage.
• Rebootless update mechanism.
• Microsoft Security Essentials included as standard.
• Multi-display support for the taskbar.
• Built-in .ISO support for image files.
• Better support for compressed files (more than just ZIP files).
Your turn!

Increasing processor efficiency by 'shutting off the lights'

There was a time when a laptop could weigh 10 pounds and still sell—a time when a cell phone was larger than a pocket—and a time when an iPod only played music.
Today's consumers expect mobile devices that are increasingly small, yet ever-more powerful. All the bells and whistles, however, suck up energy, and a phone that lasts only 4 hours because it's also a GPS device is only so much use.
To promote energy-efficient multitasking, Harvard graduate student Wonyoung Kim has developed and demonstrated a new device with the potential to reduce the power usage of modern processing chips.
The advance could allow the creation of "smarter" smartphones, slimmer laptops, and more energy-friendly data centers.
Kim's on-chip, multi-core voltage regulator (MCVR) addresses what amounts to a mismatch between power supply and demand.
"If you're listening to music on your MP3 player, you don't need to send power to the image and graphics processors at the same time," Kim says. "If you're just looking at photos, you don't need to power the audio processor or the HD video processor."
"It's like shutting off the lights when you leave the room."
Kim's research at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) showed in 2008 that fine-grain voltage control was a theoretical possibility. This month, he presented a paper at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) showing that the MCVR could actually be implemented in hardware.

Essentially a DC-DC converter, the MCVR can take a 2.4-volt input and scale it down to voltages ranging from 0.4 to 1.4V. Built for speed, it can increase or decrease the output by 1V in under 20 nanoseconds.
The MCVR also uses an algorithm to recognize parts of the processor that are not in use and cuts power to them, saving energy. Kim says it results in a longer battery life (or, in the case of stationary data centers, lower energy bills), while providing the same performance.
The on-chip design means that the power supply can be managed not just for each processor chip, but for each individual core on the chip. The short distance that signals then have to travel between the voltage regulator and the cores allows power scaling to happen quickly—in a matter of nanoseconds rather than microseconds—further improving efficiency.

Kim has obtained a provisional patent for the MCVR with his Ph.D. co-advisers at SEAS, Gu-Yeon Wei, Gordon McKay Professor of Electrical Engineering, and David Brooks, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science, who are coauthors on the paper he presented this week.
"Wonyoung Kim's research takes an important step towards a higher level of integration for future chips," says Wei. "Systems today rely on off-chip, board-level voltage regulators that are bulky and slow. Integrating the voltage regulator along with the IC chip to which it supplies power not only reduces broad-level size and cost, but also opens up exciting opportunities to improve energy efficiency."
"Kim's three-level design overcomes issues that hamper traditional buck and switch-capacitor converters by merging good attributes of both into a single structure," adds Brooks. "We believe research on integrated voltage regulators like Kim's will be an essential component of future computing devices where energy-efficient performance and low cost are in demand."
Although Kim estimates that the greatest demand for the MCVR right now could be in the market for mobile phones, the device would also have applications in other computing scenarios. Used in laptops, the MCVR might reduce the heat output of the processor, which is currently one barrier to making slimmer notebooks. In stationary scenarios, the rising cost of powering servers of ever-increasing speed and capacity could be reduced.
"This is a plug-and-play device in the sense that it can be easily incorporated into the design of processor chips," says Kim. "Including the MCVR on a chip would add about 10 percent to the manufacturing cost, but with the potential for 20 percent or more in power savings."

Scientists make single-mode laser out of a single nanowire

Although lasers come in all shapes and sizes, one of the most recent laser designs is especially intriguing, since it’s made of just a single nanowire. Due to its small size and simplicity, the single-nanowire laser could be used as a nanoscale coherent light source for applications in optical communications, sensing, and signal processing.
The team of researchers, Yao Xiao, et al., from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and Peking University in Beijing, has published their study on a new single-nanowire laser in a recent issue of Nano Letters. Although it’s not the first laser made out of just one nanowire, it offers certain advantages since it operates in a controllable single-mode.
“Previously, single-nanowire lasers are mostly operated in multiple modes,” coauthor Limin Tong of Zhejiang University told PhysOrg.com. “The single-nanowire laser reported in our work is single-mode, which is highly desired for practical applications.”
Here, the laser’s emission has a wavelength of about 738 nm (the upper end of the visible spectrum). The nanowire used to make the laser has a diameter of 200 nm, and a length of between of 50 and 75 µm. The researchers experimented with bending nanowires in different ways by peering under a microscope and folding the nanowire with fiber probes. For example, they folded nanowires so that they had loops at both ends, a loop at one end, and no loops.
To get the nanowire to act as a single-mode laser, the researchers excited the looped nanowire with a pulsed laser. As they explained, when the round-trip gain, which is sustained by feedback such as reflection, can compensate round-trip losses, lasing occurs. The researchers observed lasing in the single nanowires as two bright spots of light at both ends of the nanowire. They found that, for the nanowires that were folded into loops, the loops acted as loop mirrors, which not only offers the nanowire coupled cavities for mode selection, but also increases the nanowire’s reflectivity and reduces the lasing threshold. Together, the high reflectivity and low threshold create a high-quality lasing cavity in the nanowire.
In addition, changing the size of the loops allows the researchers to tune the laser’s wavelength. Using the fiber probes, the researchers could easily change the size of the loops. They found that decreasing the size of one of the loops changes the wavelength due to the reduction in the optical path of the lasing cavity.
The scientists hope that the single-nanowire laser, with its advantages of high mode quality and low lasing threshold, could enable new opportunities for practical applications of nanowire lasers. In addition, the study could provide a new design technique for fabricating low-threshold, single-mode lasers using other kinds of nanostructures.
“As a coherent optical source, this kind of nanowire laser does not only possess a miniaturized footprint (as many other nanowire lasers), but also offers single-mode laser output (difficult to realize in most other nanowire lasers but highly desired for practical applications),” Tong said. “Therefore, this kind of laser may offer great potential in applications such as nanoscale integrated optoelectronic circuits for optical data processing and optical sensing.”

Dramatic growth of cloud-based services expected this year

Corporate IT departments are increasing their spending on hardware and cloud services, but not on new hiring in this weak economy.
These trends are all revealed in government data, surveys and earnings reports. Cloud-based services, in particular, are expected to see spectacular market growth this year.
IDC is forecasting that public cloud services revenue in the U.S. will grow nearly 24%, from $14.2 billion in 2010 to $17.6 billion in 2011.
IDC's prediction is backed up by surveys of corporate IT organizations that are seeing accelerating interest in cloud services -- so much interest that one research firm compared it with the late 1990s' e-commerce fever.
Businesses are increasing spending on hardware as well and making up ground that was lost during the recession.
Dell this week reported a revenue increase of 5%, to nearly $15.7 billion, helped by sales to enterprises. IBM reported strong gains last month as well.
But is this spending helping IT hiring? Not yet.
According to U.S. government labor data, unemployment among IT professionals is exceeding other professions' levels.
Unemployment for computer programmers, for instance, finished at 5.7% last year, compared with 2.2% in 2007, according to government data.
"The nature of the way in which the economy is picking up is very different than it's been in the past," said Richard Pople, global IT practice leader at research and consulting firm Hackett Group.
Hackett is expecting IT employment in corporate IT departments to decline slightly this year, by 0.4%, after declining 1.1% in 2010 and 7.3% in 2009. Its projection is based on its annual survey of U.S. and European companies with revenues of $1 billion or more. For this survey, 185 companies responded.
Companies have been consolidating their IT resources, which is also spurring hardware buying. A goal is to make their IT organizations more flexible, and by doing so gain the ability to use resources globally, whether in the cloud or offshore, Pople said.
In the Hackett Group survey, IT firms were asked to rank their strategic priorities, and cloud computing came in at No. 4 this year, with 59% respondents citing it as a priority. Last year, cloud was ranked 10th out of 11, with only 27% of respondents identifying it as a critical priority.
Pople compared the rapid increase of cloud in this survey to what happened when businesses interest in Internet services took off. "We saw the same sort of shift in 1998-99, when companies were then trying to figure out how to leverage the Internet," he said.
John Longwell, vice president of research at Computer Economics, said he is also expecting IT hiring to remain flat this year, except at large companies, where he expects to see 2% staffing growth. Computer Economics defines large firms as those that have IT operational budgets of more than $20 million, which translates into a $2 billion manufacturing concern or $1 billion in the bank.
"While some companies will be adding staff, very few plan further reductions," Longwell said. "We don't anticipate that IT hiring is going to be robust, but the outlook for IT workers is improving.
"Jobs are starting to open up -- we are seeing that first in demand for contract labor, an extension of work hours, and use of service providers," he added.
Longwell said that the number of organizations that are turning to software as a service (SaaS) is rising rapidly. About 36% of the firms Computer Economics has surveyed have SaaS in place, which is up from 24% in 2009.
Longwell said that the use of SaaS is a form of outsourcing and enables companies to reduce some of their capital and staff support. But "I don't think you can blame the current employment outlook on SaaS," he said. "It's part of the picture."
Interest in outsourcing is growing as well, according to Hackett's data, something that seems consistently true among offshore firms in India based on earnings reports.
Indian offshoring giant Infosys, for instance, which receives about 65% of its revenue from North American customers, recently reported year-to-year revenue growth of nearly 29% in its most recent quarter. It employs 127,779, including a net addition of 5,311 employees in its most recent quarter.
But a survey released Thursday of 100 CFOs at U.S. technology firms by professional services firm BDO USA found that only 35% were outsourcing services or manufacturing to companies outside the U.S.
That finding represents a 43% decrease from the 2009 high, when 62% of companies were outsourcing.
"The loosening of the U.S. labor market is making it more affordable for companies to do this work at home," said Don Jones, a partner in the technology and life sciences practice at BDO. "Given the language and cultural barriers in popular outsourcing destinations in Asia, including China and India, some companies are choosing to do away with these services, now that they can afford to keep them in their backyards."
Shifting the work back to the U.S. can help cut down on customer service complaints and can improve the overall quality of service, Jones said.
High turnover and infrastructure issues in India and China are also making it difficult to outsource, he said.

Waiting for Terabit Ethernet? Don't hold your breath.

Despite the fact that Facebook famously said that it needs Terabit Ethernet, the wait for the technology could last years, experts say.
The technical, standards and economic challenges to be overcome are many, researchers at the Ethernet Technology Summit said yesterday, but they all could be overcome with enough time and effort.
Standards work could take years, says John D'Ambrosia, a researcher at Force 10 who chairs the IEEE study group that looks at higher speed Ethernet technologies. "We need to start now if we want to get there by 2015," D'Ambrosia says. "But we have a couple of issues going on here now."
One of them is that the industry craves higher density, lower cost 100G Ethernet, which will need standards as well and compete for the standards-makers' time and potentially slowing down standards for faster technology.
Accommodating Terabit Ethernet would require upgrading PCI Express standards for computer expansion cards, says Shre Shah, a researcher with Xilinx. Work needs to be done to improve their speed and keep down latency if they are to support Terabit Ethernet.
Figuring out how to transmit at terabit speed is daunting technologically. Integrated optics in silicon chips is a difficult challenge as well because it might require as many as 40 lasers at 40Gbps each. "That number of lasers is high especially if we want to integrate it" into a chip, says Arlon Martin, a researcher with Kotura, which makes silicon photonic devices.
He says by transmitting two bits per symbol using a technique called phase-shift keying, that could halve the number of lasers needed.
Vendors working on the problem would prefer to build on existing resources such as established silicon foundries and standard sized silicon wafers, says Eric Hall, vice president of business development for Aurrion, which develops silicon photonics. Bonding different materials needed to create lasers and waveguides is challenging, but progress is being made.
From an implementation standpoint, using 40 lasers would be very difficult, D'Ambrosia says. And power to run the gear would also be challenging, especially as higher speed technologies are supposed to promote overall power savings, he says.
Cost is a factor as well, with customers likely to want them as low as possible, but that is uncertain because the need for the speed may be great enough that it would be worth it to spend more.
With 400Gbps Ethernet on the horizon, 1Tbps Ethernet might not be a big enough jump in performance to warrant the effort, says Chris Cole, director of engineering at Finisar, which makes optical components and subsystems.
In order to warrant investment in the generation after 400Gbps Ethernet, a fourfold increase - 1.4Tbps Ethernet -may be the more practical goal, he says. That speed increase might warrant the cost and effort involved in bringing it about.
And that may well require a technology breakthrough to achieve, he says.

Java EE 7 work focusing on the cloud

Work on the next enterprise edition of Java is proceeding at Oracle, with the company eyeing improvements for cloud computing, REST Web services, and other capabilities, an Oracle representative confirmed on Friday.
Java EE (Java Platform, Enterprise Edition) 7 is due in 2012. Capabilities for deploying cloud computing applications and infrastructures will be key to the upgrade. "[Version 7] will be the basis for how to make Java EE relevant for the cloud," said Oracle's Ajay Patel, vice president of product management, in a webcast last week.
The upgrade also will feature significant developments geared to JavaServer Faces, for building server-side user interfaces; the Web tier, Java persistence; and JAX-RS (Java API for RESTful Web Services), according to an Oracle Java team blog post. Java EE builds on Java SE (Java Platform, Standard Edition) and is geared to enterprise-level Java computing. The Glassfish application server has served as a reference implementation of Java EE. Modularity was cited as a goal for Java EE 7 at last fall's JavaOne conference in San Francisco.
Initial Java Specification Requests pertaining to Java EE 7 were approved by the Java Community Process in January, including JSR 338, for Java Persistence API 2.1, and JSR 339, for JAX-RS 2.0. JPA is designed for use with Java EE and SE and deals with the way relational data is mapped to Java objects and the way the objects are stored in a relational database for access at a later time. Capabilities like multi-tenancy and additional mapping for metadata are being considered for JPA 2.1. JAX-RS provides an API for building Web services using the REST architecture. Key features of the new JSR include a Client API, improved support for URIs, and a Model-View-Controller architecture.
Final release of the two JSRs is planned for 2012. Other JSRs pertaining to Java EE 7 will be submitted soon. Aside from Java EE, version 2.0 of JavaFX, a rich media platform based on Java, is due this summer with such capabilities as a high-performance graphics engine and dynamic language capabilities, Patel said.

Apple's new MacBook Pros raise quality concerns

Excess thermal paste shows 'shoddy assembly work,' says expert

Apple's new MacBook Pro has some quality-of-build problems that shouldn't be seen in a notebook that costs $1,800, a teardown expert said today.

While disassembling a 15-in. MacBook Pro, iFixit.com -- a site that regularly tears down electronics and publishes do-it-yourself repair guides -- found several signs of substandard assembly.

Among iFixit's findings were a stripped screw near the notebook's subwoofer enclosure and an unlocked ZIF (zero insertion force) socket for the infrared sensor.

"[These] should not be things found inside a completely unmolested computer with an $1,800 base price," said iFixit in the teardown description posted on its site.

The refreshed MacBook Pro models launched last Thursday in what one analyst called a "ho-hum" upgrade.

IFixit also spotted an unusual amount of thermal paste applied to both the central processor and the graphics processor. "Holy thermal paste! Time will tell if the gobs of thermal paste applied to the CPU and GPU will cause overheating issues down the road," iFixit said.

Thermal paste, also called "thermal grease" and "heat sink paste," is a compound that computer makers apply to increase the thermal conductivity of a processor so heat is drawn away from the chip more efficiently.

"Paste fills in the valleys of the bumpy surfaces on both the heat sink and the chip to exchange heat between the two more efficiently," said Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, which specializes in research on graphics devices and processors. A heat sink is the component that's mounted atop a processor to dissipate heat.

But too much paste doesn't mean that the underlying processor will necessarily overheat and thus fail faster, cautioned Peddie.

"Excess paste shows sloppy application, shoddy assembly work," said Peddie. "If you can see [the paste], it ain't workin'," he added, talking about how extra, visible paste doesn't contribute to increased conductivity.

Miroslav Djuric, iFixit's director of technical communication, explained his firm's findings in more detail in an e-mail reply to questions today.

"Fit and finish was a bit of a factor for this teardown, since we really haven't seen these kinds of problems with Apple machines in the past," Djuric said. "I don't think that the stripped screw, unlocked ZIF socket, and excess thermal paste are indicators that Apple is going downhill in terms of manufacturing quality, but it did raise an eyebrow. Just like everything else in life, the manufacturing process for electronics is not perfect, and neither is Apple's."

Djuric said iFixit would keep a wary eye on future Apple devices it tears apart to see if the flaws in its MacBook Pro are the first signs of a trend.

Accused AT&T hacker makes bail

One of the two men accused of hacking AT&T's website to grab personal information about thousands of iPad users has been released on bail.
Andrew Auernheimer was released from custody on Monday on a US$50,000 bond. He will be working for a friend's New Jersey company as a computer consultant while out on bail, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Auernheimer is not allowed to travel outside of New Jersey and New York and is prohibited from using Internet-enabled cell phones. While on bail, he can use the Internet, but only for work-related tasks, the DOJ said.
Auernheimer, who used the hacker name Weev, and Daniel Spitler were charged with fraud and conspiracy last month in connection with the June 2010 incident, where members of their hacking group downloaded data on about 120,000 iPad users and handed it over to a reporter, saying they had uncovered an important security vulnerability in the AT&T website.
The flaw allowed them to obtain both the e-mail addresses and unique ICC-ID (integrated circuit card identifier) numbers belonging to the iPad users.
In subsequent interviews, Auernheimer said he was trying to make AT&T aware of a serious security flaw.
He also said his group had notified AT&T about the issue, but court documents cast doubt on that claim. "You DID call tech support right?" asked one hacker, named Nstyr, in a chat log excerpt obtained by prosecutors. "Totally but not really," Auernheimer replied. "I don't... care I hope they sue me."
Spitler made bail after appearing in a New Jersey court last month.

Infected Android app runs up big texting bills

Hackers up ante by adding more malicious 'features' to legitimate smartphone apps, says Symantec
A rogue Android app that's been tweaked by hackers can hijack a smartphone and run up big texting bills before the owner knows it, Symantec said today.
The newest in a line of compromised Android apps, said Vikram Thakur, a principle security response manager at Symantec, is Steamy Window, a free program that Chinese hackers have modified, then re-released into the wild.
The cyber criminals grabbed a copy of Steamy Windows, then added a backdoor Trojan horse - "Android.Pjapps" by Symantec's label -- to the app's code. The reworked app is then placed on unsanctioned third-party "app stores" where unsuspecting or careless Android smartphones find it, download it and install it.
"This one stands out," said Thakur on Monday. "It's pretty comprehensive in what it's doing."
The Trojan planted by the malware-infected Steamy Windows can install other applications, monkey with the phone's browser bookmarks, surreptitiously navigate to Web sites and silently send text messages, said Thakur.
The last is how the criminals make money.
"The Trojan lets them send SMS [short message service] messages to premium rate numbers," said Thakur, for which the hackers are paid commissions.
Android.Pjapps also has a built-in filter that blocks incoming texts from the user's carrier, a trick it uses to keep victims in the dark about the invisible texting.
"It monitors inbound SMS texts, and blocks alerts telling you that you've already exceeded your quota," Thakur said. Smartphone owners then wouldn't be aware of the charges they've racked up texting premium services until they receive their next statement.
Symantec found the cloned Steamy Windows app on a Web site hosted by Chinese servers.
The practice of altering legitimate Android apps to carry malware isn't new -- earlier this year, security experts warned that Monkey Jump was being cloned by criminals for the same purpose -- but the bogus Steamy Window app shows that hackers are getting better at reworking mobile software.
"The code inside [Steamy Windows] can be easily added to other apps," said Thakur today. "For someone who knows what they're doing -- and it seems these people have a good understanding of how apps are coded -- I'd put this in the 'trivial to do' category. The last few months, it seems to be ramping up."
Android smartphones are an attractive target for hackers, Thakur continued, because of their increasing popularity and because, unlike Apple's iOS, users can install apps downloaded from third-party distribution sites.
"Where there's honey, there's bees," said Thakur.
Smartphone owners should be wary of unauthorized app stores, Thakur said. "Downloading an app from one of these [third-party] sites is like downloading a Windows app from a 'warez' site," he said, referring to sites that post illegally-obtained content, which often is malware infected.
"And if you're hell-bent on using them, look at the permissions the app requests when it installs. A [rogue] app will request more permissions than the legitimate version," he said.

Apple gets back to basics in Mac OS X Lion

Apple on Thursday gave us another sneak peek at what's in store for the next major release of Mac OS X, dubbed Lion, due out this summer. Between the iOS-inspired features we saw in the first Lion preview in October and the new features the company revealed today, it's clearer than ever that Apple isn't merely getting Back to the Mac. With Lion, Apple is getting back to basics, making significant changes and adding new features that are all focused on making the Mac easier to use and more accessible to both new and longtime users.
Apple has always touted the Mac as the "computer for the rest of us," wearing its reputation on its shoulder for designing intuitive interfaces and great experiences. But there have always been parts of Mac OS X where those claims just don't hold up. Remember the last time you tried to explain to your parents or non-technical friends how to download and install Firefox from a Disk Image--or for that matter, what a Disk Image even is? With the meteoric rise of iOS and the iPad changing our perception of the personal computer, Mac OS X can sometimes look downright Windows-y by comparison.
Lion is designed to fix that.
Apple isn't kidding around when it says the iPad was the inspiration for many of the big additions and changes in Mac OS X Lion. In the October preview, we saw some of the blossoming fruits of iOS's muse: full-screen apps, even deeper multitouch support with new gestures, and a new Launchpad view of all your apps that was stolen straight off the iPad's homescreen--all are focused on making parts of Mac OS X and our apps more accessible.
There is a general theme in Lion of simplifying Mac OS X, either by streamlining existing features or by bringing iOS workflow perks to the Mac. For example, Apple unveiled a new Lion feature on Thursday, called AirDrop, which is "a remarkably simple way to copy files wirelessly from one Mac to another with no setup." But this just sounds like an update and rebranding of the Bonjour file sharing and public folder features that Mac OS X has had all along, except the goal of AirDrop is to make file sharing between family and coworkers much, much easier to grasp and use. Like it did for some parts of iOS, Apple simplified existing Mac OS X features and polished them up with a better interface.
There are plenty of other more subtle tweaks that are making the pilgrimage from iOS to Mac OS, all in the name of streamlining the interface and the many ways we interact with apps. From more legible and universal icons (see Mail 5 on Apple's Lion page), to popovers (see iLife '11), to scrollbars that can hide when you don't need them, Mac OS X Lion will simply look cleaner and more intuitive than any of its predecessors, and it has iOS to thank.
But if the iPad was "just a giant iPod touch," is the Mac becoming "just a giant iPad?" Not in the least. The file system hasn't gone anywhere, the Finder looks to have received some much-needed attention, and despite concerns of Apple embracing digital totalitarianism after announcing the Mac App Store, you will not be forced to give up the ability to install software from anywhere on the Web.
Another new Lion feature Apple announced, "Resume," is also an ode to iOS, but it will likely have an even larger impact on the Mac. Just like switching between apps on an iPad or iPhone, or even restarting the device, Resume is Lion's official support for third-party Mac apps to pick up right where they left off, even after a restart. That's not merely a good idea in iOS, it's just a good idea for any reasonably complex computing device--especially one that is designed to multitask and juggle many apps and open windows with ease.
Speaking of recovering your data, a pair of new features will make it easier to continue working with individual documents and recuperating lost data--key requirements of any worker bee who needs more power and flexibility than iOS typically offers. Auto Save will allow apps to automatically save your work as you create it, while Versions brings the continuous backup concepts and interface behind Time Machine down to a per-document basis. You will be able to step back through the history of the current file on-the-fly and easily revert to a previous iteration.
Great artists reciprocate
iOS and Mac OS X are symbiotic entities. When designing iOS, Apple distilled the Mac down to something pocketable, but the core concepts are there, such as an app-centric workflow, an always-accessible "home base" Dock, and a fierce pursuit of intuitive interfaces. After gaining knowledge and experience from nearly five years and four versions of iOS, Apple clearly felt that it's time to return the favor in Lion. Apple is incorporating some of the fresh simplicity of iOS back into its point-and-click desktop computing platform that, at its conceptual core, is almost three decades old.
When Lion arrives, the Mac might begin to resemble some aspects of Apple's simpler, more streamlined OS that's designed for mobile devices. But that's only because they are fundamentally good ideas that can polish a full-featured desktop platform and make it even easier to use, without sacrificing any of the power and flexibility that brought users to the platform to begin with.

App developers double down on Android tablets, says survey

Bet that prices will fall, creating mass market for their wares
Mobile developers are betting that a wave of Android tablets this year floats their application boasts, according to a survey published today.
The rush to cash in on an expected Android bonanza will also solidify the mobile race into a two-horse contest between Google and Apple, and put other operating systems into a hole that may be tough to climb out from, the survey said.
"The question from most developers is 'After iPhone, where do I go? Android or iPad?'" said Scott Schwarzhoff, vice president of marketing at Mountain View, Calif.-based Appcelerator. "If you're interested in growing market share, then it's Android. Developers believe [Android tablets] will have a massive impact on consumer computing."
The poll, conducted two weeks ago by Appcelerator and research firm IDC, polled more than 2,200 developers who use Appcelerator's Titanium cross-platform compiler to produce mobile applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
Of the developers surveyed, 92% said that they were "very interested" in creating apps for the iPhone, while 87% answered the same for Android-based smartphones, a five point jump since the last poll three months ago.
But it was the response to tablet app development that caught Schwarzhoff's eye.
"Android tablets picked up 12 points," said Schwarzhoff, "with 74% saying they were very interested." Apple's iPad, meanwhile, gained just three percentage points to 87% of the developers.
The quick climb by Android tablets in the survey, largely based on the scores of companies saying at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that they would launch such devices this year, makes Google's OS the one to watch in the tablet space during 2011, Schwarzhoff argued.
"This will be the theme to watch all year long," said Schwarzhoff. "The iPad will just roll along, no matter what's in the iPad 2. But Android will be the major wild card."
These days, developers have to wager on a platform long before it's popular, or risk being left in the dust by competitors, said Schwarzhoff. And that means Appcelerator's survey is just the current opinion by programmers of Android tablets' potential.
Nothing said that better than the number one factor that developers identified as crucial to the success of Android tablets: The price of the hardware.
"Our assumption was that Honeycomb would be the driving factor," said Schwarzhoff, referring to the upcoming version of Android designed for tablets. "But not only was it not first, it was fourth. The really surprising finding was that price was number one."
With so many Android tablets slated to ship this year -- by Schwarzhoff's count, 85 were announced at CES earlier this month -- price will be a competitive lever some will use to gain an edge, developers believe. And that, they're convinced, will mean market share.
"Price becomes a huge factor with so many new devices," said Schwarzhoff. "Developers see the possibility of a sub-$200 tablet, even a sub-$100 tablet, and think there's a major opportunity because volume numbers [of the hardware] are the number one thing any developer looks at."
But Android tablet prices -- which Apple chief operating officer included in his list of "vapor" elements of iPad rivals -- have yet to be revealed, putting developers in the guessing game.
Schwarzhoff acknowledged that the situation was fluid. "By this holiday season, we may see a new dynamic [on tablet pricing] that we don't fully understand yet."
Developers are also eyeing Android tablets because of the success of Android smartphones, figuring that they can use what they've learned creating phone apps to build tablet programs. "If you're successful in phones, whether Android or iPhone, you have the wind at your back when it comes to tablets," Schwarzhoff noted.
Another factor in developers' minds that justifies the investment in Android tablets is the success of the Android Market, and the recent announcement of Amazon's upcoming Android app store. More than 8-in-10 said they were very interested in distributing apps in Google's own e-market, while 37% said they were just as eager to try out Amazon's when it launches later this year.
"Marketplaces are a huge driving factor in developers' decisions," said Schwarzhoff, who argued that Amazon's entry is actually a benefit, not a threat, to Google. "When you bring in another marketplace, it's another competitor to Apple's," he said.
The attention paid to Android, and the continued interest in developing for iOS on the iPhone and iPad, means that other operating systems could easily be left out in the cold, the poll revealed.
While Schwarzhoff said that Windows Phone 7 was in a "reasonably good position, relative to expectations," with 36% of the developers surveyed saying they were very interested in creating apps for the platform, he warned that Windows and Research in Motion's BlackBerry risked sliding into irrelevance.
"You get to a point, and very quickly, where Microsoft or BlackBerry have to get the major marketplace play going that can vault them up the ranks," Schwarzhoff said. "Unless you can catch up to Android and Apple, you fall further and further behind. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer, that seems to be the dynamic."

Google Apps Marketplace gets educated

Google is debuting on Tuesday a special category for education-related software in its Apps Marketplace, prompted by what it considers the success of its Apps for Education collaboration and communication suite.
At launch, the education section of the Apps Marketplace will feature about 20 Web applications, including classroom managers, gradebooks and learning aides. Some of the applications are new to the marketplace, while others were there before.
There are about 10 million end users of Google Apps for Education, which is free, and the new Apps Marketplace category is envisioned as a central repository where educational institutions can seek and evaluate applications for students, teachers and staff, said Scott McMullan, Google Apps partner lead, in a phone interview.
Introduced in March of last year, the Apps Marketplace is an online store whose third-party applications are integrated in a variety of ways, like single sign-on and common UI navigation, with the Google Apps suite through a series of APIs. Google receives a commission from applications sold via the marketplace.
"With millions of users already using Google Apps for Education, LearnBoost saw an opportunity to be part of a bigger story in education. Google's involvement credibly signals that education is becoming more interesting to technology companies," said via e-mail Rafael Corrales , CEO of LearnBoost, which makes a gradebook application.
BrainPOP, maker of learning aides and tools, was founded in 1999 and views Google Apps for Education and the marketplace as further proof that educational institutions are embracing the digital world in a major way.
"Every day we're seeing signs that this vision is becoming a reality. Great educational resources are already being discovered, shared, consumed, mixed, and evaluated online. The need for organizing access, permissions, storage, and formative assessment data is already here, and Google's early grassroots success among teachers bodes well for Google Apps," said BrainPOP COO Din Heiman via e-mail.

<< THE ELEVEN DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE >>

The following are The SEVEN Different Ways to MAKE MONEY ONLINE WITHOUT ANY INVESTMENT. Here they are explained very Clearly and Briefly. So choose the way of earning you like the most.

YOUR FIRST WAY TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE WITHOUT ANY INVESTMENT - SHARING FILES

Now before letting you to get bored anymore, let me tell you straight- the first and the simplest way to make money online without spending a dime for free. The website given below pays you money every time for Sharing Files Online. Sharing means you will upload a file on this website and whenever someone downloads it you will be paid cash for each and every download. Registration don't cost a penny from your pocket, you can upload unlimited number of files of any size, in any format, which can be downloaded for unlimited number of times.
One important thing to be noted here that your friend or any downloader who will download your uploaded files don't need to register on this site for downloading, She/he can download it directly from the download link. And also this site supports parallel download. Parallel means unlike RapidShare the downloader can download more than one file at the same time. So, the downloader can start downloading your file with ease.
Now just think in my way. There are many people on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace and Orkut who request new mp3s, videos, films, games, software and many other kind of files every day and many people provide them the download links. You can also give them the download link but this time you will earn money for every download.
I remember a day few months ago when I gave a download link of an mp3 to someone who asked a question at Yahoo!. I answered that  and told him from where to download this song for free and till today I am earning from that link. You will confuse how? The reason is that many people search that song daily on Google and Yahoo, and that Question where I posted my Answer with my link comes on the result page, so I got many downloaders daily who download my file. That's the power of Yahoo! Answer. So it is another good place where you can find many downloaders. I think this is the simplest way to make money online without any investment that's why I keep it under "first way". So register on the site given below, its 100% free, and will never beg for any hidden fees later.

YOUR SECOND WAY TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE WITH NO INVESTMENT - PAID TO CLICK

In second way of making online money with no capital or no investment you will use "Paid To Click" sites or "PTC sites". These sites pay money for just clicking on Advert and nothing more hidden job they want from us. Several sponsors around the globe wants to advertize their Products or Services online on world wide web or just wants more traffic to their websites, so they simple pay money to these ptc sites and we as a member of these ptc sites view the sponsors website or products by clicking on the adverts and then these ptc sites will pay us money online by means of E-Currency (PayPal/AlertPay Money) for simply just clicking on advertisement.
The procedure is very simple; First of all we click on the advertisement link. As we click, a new window opens with the sponsor's website showing their service or product information. This sponsor's website opens with a count-down-time-counter on the top of the explorer which lasts for just 20 to 30 Seconds and when it reaches zero money is transferred in our account. This is how simple to earn extra money online with "no investment" by just viewing the advert or website for few seconds.
PTC sites pay money online to their members for each and every click they did. This PTC job of clicking and viewing advert is very simple and easy. Even while watching movies or listening to the music on your computer, you can click Adverts in a minimize window in the background and can continue your work. The most fruitful part is that these PTC sites don't require any registration fee from you like that of many other online money earning jobs.
Highly Recommended Job:
I personally recommend you to join around 8-10 paid to click websites. For the reason, unlike any other jobs explained on this website, paid to click is the simplest job where you can click and minimize the window. This makes PTC program to be the most adaptable with other jobs; you can choose any other potential ways of making money online explained in this post, focus on them freely and you can keep paid to click program as a subsidiary or secondary source of income.
Suppose you join 10 PTC websites and click 50 adverts daily worth one cent each, so your daily income will be $0.50 and monthly will be $15 which is overall a good amount and can help you when you become ready to invest your earning as explained on “Investment page”. So do join up to the limit which suits your personality and routine most.
I provide only five paid to click websites, which I know, are the most honest one and are sovereign in the PTC industry. They all are SSL certificate secured (encrypted connection) and many from them are DDOS protected and have global Certified Authority or CA (proof of their identity and real business). The scam or fraud PTC website owners will never waste their money in purchasing such costly add-ons for their websites. I myself analyze and test all the websites provided below, so no matters of trust and fraud remains. If I find more such honest and secure websites I will add them here, so always check back this blog. Currently I have two more paid to click website in my arsenal but I will add them after the completion of the testing period.
How to do this smartly without Affecting and Disturbing your main job:-
First of all choose the best time from your daily routine to click in PTC program like after lunch or dinner, before sleeping or in the evening or in your break time. Suppose you join 10 PTC websites, open all the 10 at the same time, each of them in a separate window of your web-browser. Now click on advertisement of the very first windows website. The advertisement will start loading and a countdown timer of 20-30 second will start. Now instead of waiting for countdown timer to reach zero, minimize the web-browser window and open the second browser window. Click on the advertisement on it, countdown timer bar will start, now again instead of waiting for it to hit zero, minimize it and switch to the third browser window. Continue it from first browser window to the tenth browser window in the form of a chain or a cycle. This will save your plenty of waiting time which could rather be wasted by countdown timers or bars.
One more thing that you can also do, is not to log-out or sign-out, by doing so you won’t need to re-enter your username and password again and again daily (unless you clear your browser cookies or temporary internet files or private data or whatever). Web browser's functions/facilities like “remember password” or “auto fill” probably will not help you to skip the task of re-entering your username and password, since the websites which I provided below are “SSL secured” which means the connection is encrypted, and encrypted connections don't allow web-browsers to store sensitive informations. So never sign-out/log-out and never clear your web-browsers cookies or temporary files. So, that’s all about the techniques to save time and I guarantee if you do it correctly, then you will finish your job of clicking in 10 minutes, for the sake of mine check it and prove me wrong(the only condition is a good internet connection).
So, finally register on the sites given below, it won't cost a penny of money from your pocket to register, and start your first online money earning today, instantly with zero investment. Read more about individual site by clicking on the links provided below. So, Earn Money Online Fast and without any Investment easily.

YOUR FOURTH WAY TO EARN MONEY ONLINE WITHOUT ANY INVESTMENT -

The fourth way of making wealth on the internet without any expense or without any investment is the Traffic Exchange. It may be very unfamiliar to you if you are new to online earning world. My 25% of online earning comes from this way. So take your time to learn it if you wants to be as rich as me. It’s very simple. In traffic exchange we visits others sites and earn money and credits. A window will open containing a time counter on the top with a websites and this time counter last for few seconds. It’s similar to PTC site’s time counter explained in second way to make money. When time counter reaches zero then another site open in that same window. And for visiting each site we are given credits.
There is a credit ratio which you must learn. 1:1 ratio means for visiting one site you will earn one credit (in this ratio time counter on the top will last for 20 seconds), 2:1 credit ratio means for visiting two site you will earn one credits (here the time counter will last for 15 seconds) and 1:2 ratio means for visiting one site you will earn two credits (time counter last for 40 seconds). Similarly are 2:3 and 4:3 ratios. Now for earning 1000 credits you will be given $0.30. Your credits are yours. It means after making 1000 credits you will earn 30 cents and still you have those earned credits into your account.
Now the interesting question is what can you do with these credits? Answer is very simple. You can ASSIGN them to your own site and get more visits or hits or simply say more traffic to your website. You can consider your earned Credits as Hits you collected. When you assign them to your website you will surely get visits. If you don't want traffic to your website or you don't have one then also no problem, you can still utilize your earned credits. You can assign those credits to your Referral Link or Affiliate Link and can earn when someone signup using your link, this is known as Paid Per Lead.
You can also use these credits for PTP sites or Paid To Promote websites. These are explained in fifth way to make money. So don't worry about those credits which you will earn, there are variety of ways by which you can spend them. This site had helped me a lot in the times when I was in trouble and needs money. It is a site like- work more and earns more, there is no per day earning restrictions like other ways of online money making have. For now to learn how to better utilize the earned credits using PTP sites you must navigate to fifth way of making money. Click on the site given below to register.

Fifth way is the special one of making money online. They are special because they don’t provide you only a single job, they allows you make money online with so many ways using the same website or same platform. They are famous as Aurora Bux Sites. They are multi-purpose websites or better say multi-talented sites, because they provide several way of earning capital.
Several ways include Paid To Click, Paid To Read, Paid to Read Email, and Paid to Complete Offers (like Paid to signup etc.), Traffic Exchange and the most important Paid To Promote. You are already familiar with Paid to Click website or PTC websites as they are already explained in second way to earn money. And Paid to Read is exactly similar to Paid to click, I don’t bother to explain you this because you will yourself understand when you try it yourself. And Paid to Read Email is also similar to Paid to Click because this time the advertisement link you need to click to earn cash will be emailed to you and you have to click it from the link which is provided with the content in the email body. Paid to Complete Offer is explained to you in third way to make money on the internet. And the wonder credits and traffic exchange is explained in fourth way of earning money online with zero investment.
Now before introducing you with Paid to Promote let me clear that you are already familiar with paid to click, paid to read, paid to complete offers, and traffic exchange? Yes! Okay. So let me introduce a way to make online money by using Get Paid To Promote. By looking at the word promote you can easily conclude that in this we will be get paid for promoting something, yes! You are right. You will get cash to promote a website. Promotion doesn’t mean you have to write some reviews or something else. Here promoting a website means you will be given a promotion links. And you will be paid every time whenever someone clicks on that link and opens that website. Simply it means if you get more hits to that promotion link then you will be paid more currency.
In the fourth way of making money I already told you that I will explain how to better utilize your Credits earned through traffic exchange. And this is the way of utilizing your credits via PTP or PAID TO PROMOTE. Now how much credits you earn from traffic exchange assign all of them to these promotion links. Credits are equivalent to hits or clicks. So more you have earned credits more you can get hits to your promotion link and more you can make cash online.
Sometimes I need urgent money so I use both traffic exchange and this paid to promote of aurora site and fulfill my need of money. They are most suitable way which I prefer because they don’t have any per day restriction like others way. Simply just more you work and more you will get. Many of the people using both the sites don’t know this trick of credits and PTP. Even I discover it after 2 months of joining.

YOUR TENTH WAY TO MAKE FUNDS ONLINE WITHOUT ANY INVESTMENT - LINK SHARING

In this online world everyone share links. We send links of funny videos or images to our friends by forwarding or composing an email, or while chatting at chat rooms, or at social networking sites like Orkut or FaceBook or Twitter. It’s the normal thing which we all do daily. Why don’t make money doing so?
In tenth way of making money online without any investment, you will earn cash for simply Sharing Links. You can share any kind of links like of a website link or celebrity’s blog link, or video or an image link, an mp3 link, an informative article link, or even a download file link. But to make money by sharing those links you need to MONETIZE them first or better say you need to make them a PAID LINK. You have to use the below websites to make the normal link a Paid Link.
It’s very easy to convert a normal link into a paid link. First of all register on the website give below. After login there click on “create links” from the menu bar. It will then ask you for the link which you want to convert into a paid link. Copy your normal link and paste there, for example if you wants to make a paid link of a YouTube video then copy the link which appears in the address bar of that video window and paste it there to convert it.
After that it will ask for “Landing Page Content”. Here the landing page means the page which will open when your link is clicked. So there will be two options namely “clean for all ages” and “adult 18+”. Suppose you were sending link of funny image which does not contains adult content then select “clean for all age” option.
After that it will ask you for the type of paid link you want to create. Actually when we make a paid link and when someone clicks on it then it will show some advertisement. And these adverts are shown in three ways.
First one is “intermission ad” type where a whole page full of adverts will be shown for few seconds before opening your actual page. Suppose if you make a paid link of an audio mp3 using this intermission ad type then whenever someone clicks on that link, first of all a page will be opened showing advertisements and after 15 seconds it will automatically open that audio mp3 page. This type of paid link pays the most.
Second one is “popup ad” type. Here an addition popup window showing ads will be opened along with your actual link page window whenever someone clicks on this type of paid link. For example if you decided to create a paid link of a RapidShare link then whenever your friends click on it then it will open two windows; first one showing advertisements and the second one showing the download page of RapidShare. Here your friends will not wait for 15 seconds.
Third type is “top-banner ad” type where the advertisements will be automatically adjusted on the top of your link’s landing page. For example if you create a paid link of celebrity's blog link then when clicked it will show advertisement on the top of that same blog. Here no additional window opens and no one needs to wait for few second to open the actual page.
More people open your share link means more money you will collect. Below are the most trusted and honest websites on this internet so register on them and safely make money online without investment. For more information on this topic check FAQ. Also some amazing tricks are provided there to earn more. Enjoy it.
